NorCham Michigan is pleased to announce that Kongsberg Discovery has joined our growing network of Norwegian-American businesses.

Kongsberg Discovery is a Norwegian ocean technology leader, developing advanced sensors, sonar systems, and autonomous solutions that help customers map, monitor, and understand ocean space. Part of the renowned Kongsberg Gruppen — one of Norway's most respected technology companies — Kongsberg Discovery operates at the forefront of maritime and underwater innovation, serving both commercial and government clients worldwide.

A Strong and Growing U.S. Presence

In the United States, Kongsberg Discovery has built a strong footprint over many years. The company is the exclusive supplier and integrator of sonar equipment used for oceanographic survey and research missions, and currently supports the sonar mission systems on more than 30 ships in the U.S. government and academic fleets. From scientific exploration to national defense, Kongsberg Discovery's technology plays a vital role in how the United States understands and operates in the ocean environment.

A Historic Milestone: U.S. Production of HUGIN

Perhaps most notably, Kongsberg Discovery has announced that it will begin producing its HUGIN autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV) in the United States in 2026 — the first time the company will manufacture AUVs outside of Scandinavia. Production will take place at the company's existing facility in Lynnwood, Washington, chosen in part for its proximity to Puget Sound, whose deep, protected waters closely resemble the Norwegian fjords where HUGIN is traditionally tested.

HUGIN is one of the world's most advanced AUVs, used for seabed mapping, scientific research, and defense applications. Its U.S. production marks a significant step in Kongsberg Discovery's commitment to the American market.
